GAP 15 Düsseldorf

In 2005 at the end of the renowned Königsalle in Düsseldorf, a 23-floor high-rise for Ernst&Young was built. Our light concept for the building includes the importance of its impact
from a distance for the entire urban area. The dynamic basic design of the structure is underlined by a linear lighting pattern that becomes fainter as the lines travel toward the opposite ends. The project was overseen by our team during all phases ranging from the overall effect at night and the lighting of the workstations to the subterranean parking area and the daylight planning.

Office +
The total floor space of the all-glass office tower is approximately 42,000 m². This space is primarily used by the Düsseldorf branch of Ernst & Young. The high-rise is connected with a restored historical building via a bridge.
Highrise +
GAP 15 measures approximately 90 m high, has 24 floors in the form of off-set ellipses. GAP 15 defines the Düsseldorf skyline together with the high-rise Sky Office (lighting design by Kardorff Ingenieure), the Düsseldorf Stadtsparkasse, and the two high-rises, Thyssen Dreischeibenhaus and the ARAG Tower.
Facade +
The facade is illuminated by bands of light running around the circumference that are dimmed by up to 3% in order to keep the glare to a minimum in the exterior areas and to achieve a sculptural effect on the part of the building.
Entrance +
The large-scale entrance receives appropriate lighting through curved ceiling sections and hard light emitted from downlights.
Conference +
Not only in the offices, but also in the conference rooms, the pendant luminaires have the same form and placement. This gives them a uniformity when seen from outside, although when directly viewed, the pendant luminaires in the conference rooms have a more impressive appearance as a result of their highly polished chrome plating.
Workplace +
The over 3 meter-long office pendant luminaires consist of modules (each 30 cm long). Through the use of different lamellae and reflectors, the proportions of direct and indirect lighting can be varied. A highly flexible ability to adjust to room use and size is the result.
Underground Parking +
In the underground parking garage, the differentiation of the lighting between the parking spaces and driving lanes creates a better sense of orientation than is the case with standard solutions. The greater intensity of lighting for the lanes also improves safety for pedestrians.
Lighting Technology:
Artificial Light +
The nocturnal impression of the building is defined by the rows of lights running around its periphery and which through continual dimming make the elliptical form of the two building segments into something that can be experienced. The continuous office lighting gives the ceiling a uniform appearance expressing a great visual tranquility. The office lighting unit is highly variable in order to respond flexibly to different uses and room sizes without altering its outer appearance.
Daylight +
We advised the client and the planning team on all issues regarding natural light. Analyses and sampling led to an ideal sun screen and anti-glare shield in the offices and conference rooms. The upwardly opened lamellae reflect the natural light onto the ceiling and allow for an unobstructed view of the exterior. Calculations confirm that even when using the sun screen, the daylight behind the glass facade is very effective. In respect to the conference rooms, it was demonstrated that the use of audio-visual equipment is not compromised.
