Eleftheria Square, Cyprus

The public square is located in Nicosia, the capital of the Republic of Cyprus. The square includes the new construction of a bridge and remodeling of the grounds in the area surrounding the medieval fortifications. The city wall, streets and pathways, square, gardens and fountains were illuminated. Additional facilities:  informational center, cafeteria, restaurant, amphitheater, parking area, bus stop.

Urban Space +
The bridge over the medieval city moat is the only open square in the dense city center of Nicosia. With the design by Zaha Hadid Architects, this area now functions as the central gathering area of the city.
Monument +
The medieval remains of the city wall have been excavated and illuminated as an architectural monument.

Exteriors +
Light gives structure to the square and creates polymorphic islands of light.
Staircase +
The stairs and handrails are lit with LED ribbons.
Lighting Technology:
Artificial Light +
Dynamic light is made possible with more than 500 individual light sources on the upper side of the bridge. The ground luminaire has been specially designed for this project.
Daylight +
The daylight conditions underneath the bridge have been intensively simulated to measure the times when artificial light is needed.
LED +
With the exception of the high light poles and the projectors for lighting the city wall, LED lights are used exclusively.
